
The shop steward system is a key ingredient to the success of any
union. The basic shop steward course is essential for all new stewards and
stewards who would like to brush up on internal organizing and grievance
handling skills.
The
Department also offers other courses, seminars and conferences of special
interest to stewards, including courses in internal organizing, grievance
handling, parliamentary procedure, communication skills and leadership skill
development.

At these prep courses on Saturdays, students review for both the
reading and math segments of the S.A.T.s. There is a nominal fee for all
participants in this course. This program is held twice a year for seven-week
terms beginning in September and March. [S.A.T. and Scholastic Assessment Test
are registered trademarks of the College Entrance Examination Board. DC 37 is
solely responsible for the contents of the course.]

The Education Committee’s Memorial Scholarship honors past union
leaders who have helped build DC 37. The committee also awards four Education
Committee Scholarships to children or grandchildren of members or retirees who
are currently enrolled in the first or second year of college, technical
school, business school or culinary institute.
There are two scholarships specifically for students with disabilities who are
in an education program beyond high school.

The DC 37 Education Department offers a variety
of interesting programs on Saturdays for members, their spouses and children,
and retirees of DC 37. All classes meet for l2 weeks and there is a fee for
each individual program. These fees do not include equipment, such as a guitar,
ballet slippers, a camera, etc.
Registration for
these classes take place twice a year. Watch for the announcements in the
Public Employee Press regarding registration.
The following are
the classes offered:
DC 37, in conjunction with the Central Labor Council, refers
children of members (ages 7-14) to several excellent camps outside New York
City. All of the camps are run by non-profit organizations with many years of
experience working with children.
The average camp stay is two or three weeks. All camps are interracial and
nonsectarian. The fee to union parents is approximately $160 per week and is
paid directly to the camp. This fee does not cover the full weekly cost and the
difference is made up by contributions from the labor movement. Registration

The Retirees Education Program of the DC 37 Education Department, working
together with the Retirees Association of DC 37, offers rich educational,
recreational and social opportunities to members of the Retirees Association.
Right now, retired members are taking Not To Be Alone, American Studies,
Dancercise, Literature, Black History, Arts and Crafts Workshop, Exercise for
Older Adults, Jewish History, Bridge, Introduction to Computers--Word 2000,
Retirees Reading Club, day trips and tours of the various boroughs.
